Hi Renee,
There are many potential causes for a cat to start vomiting. Different causes and risks can depend a lot on a cat’s age, their environment, and habits. If this is acute vomiting that occurred suddenly and vomiting of any kind is very unusual to see in your cat and as you mentioned they can’t hold down anything, it’s really important to get an appointment with a vet as soon as you can. From only what you mentioned, you should have your cat seen within the next 12 hours/today unless there are additional signs you’re seeing that suggest more urgency.
Dietary indiscretion can be a very common cause, especially for young cats. Any new food or treats can be another simple reason. But there are many other reasons for vomiting where the stomach or digestion are not the root cause, so it’s important to get a physical exam with a vet. There are some medications, treatments, and supportive care, that can be given at a vet clinic to quickly address vomiting depending on the suspected cause.
I wouldn’t want you to spend so much time reading about the topic at the expense of getting your kitty cared for, but if you do feel the level of urgency is lower and you would like to, see the article link here from our site on vomiting in cats, which can help explain some of those causes and approaches to treatment more.
