  • Brief strange breathing

I woke up and my cat seemed to have strained breathing for maybe 30 sec to 1 minute. I checked his gums and they seem normal and he has energy and used the litter box shortly after and was able and highly willing to play. I’m just a little jarred by waking up to him breathing hard just sitting there.

Hi Trinity, it’s hard to be certain what you saw from your description. Video clips in these cases are the most helpful I find. I will venture to say that the most common cause of strained breathing in an otherwise apparently healthy cat is an asthmatic cough. Below is a video link to a cat having an asthma cough. See if this is similar to what you saw and I can try to provide some more insight for you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5iC510LmuI
