Best dry cat food for bladder crystals and constant itching
I’m looking for a recommendation for a dry cat food that can treat bladder crystals and stop my cat from scratching herself all the time. She’s a very picky eater too. Thanks!

Hi Rachel, in my opinion, the vet will prescribe an appropriate diet for your cat. I’m not sure if the itching is related to your cat’s issues; it could be a separate problem caused by food allergies. Have you taken your pet to the vet yet?

I have looked into diets such as Royal Canin Urinary S/O, Virbac Urology U2, Mera Vital Urinary, and Happy Cat Minkas Urinary Care. All of those address bladder crystals, and the Happy Cat Minkas formula also includes nutrients (like omega-3/6) that help with skin and coat health.

If you’re actually looking to “treat” urinary bladder crystals, a prescription diet is necessary. You may see urinary health diets that can use language like “supports urinary health”, which crystals may be a part of, but none of them can carry a label for treating or preventing crystals. Any prescription diet for that indication will work, it often depends on palatability for your cat. My own cat preferred Purina UR, but other options include Royal Canin SO and Hill’s c/d.
For dry skin, you’re best starting with an exam with your vet. It is possible for diet to be related, but there can be many other reasons for itchy skin exclusive of diet or protein allergies.

i think this problem can be related to allregies make sure the air is clean where your cat livess mostly and passesmuch time

We have 1 cat that had crystals 5 years ago and have had him on Hill’s CD which he loves and the other 7 do too! For his wet, we use to use Hills CD but he changed his mind so we went to Purina RX canned. He hasn’t had any issues since. I would like to add that we also provide a water fountain which he drinks better from and we put a little water in his food with forti flora. I hope you’ve got the problem figured out.

You might want to try a urinary-care dry diet formulated for bladder crystals, ideally recommended by your vet after a urine test. Also consider adding moist food or water fountains to help reduce itchiness and support overall skin/urinary health.

Hi Rachel
We have 2 males that had bladder issues and both have been on Hills CD for 5 and 6 years. Only one time did one have issues again but not a blockage. So I swear on this kibble and the other cats will only eat it too since it smells so good. Now our feral is getting to where he won’t eat any other hard either. It must have a taste cats really love! I think the itching is possibly allergy related and that can take a long time to narrow down.
