Our outdoor cat Dusty Rose adopted us and now with cold weather coming we are moving her indoors. How do we train her to use an indoor litter box?

    Hi David,

Thank you for bringing Dusty Rose indoors to keep her warm. I hope she can eventually go outside to enjoy the fresh air occasionally.

To start training her to use the litter box, purchase a few large, unhooded trays and choose the right litter: unscented, easy to dig in, and with a texture that mimics the soil she’s used to. You can also mix a little garden soil with the litter to make it more familiar to her.

Initially, multiple trays should be placed around the house. Put one in a secluded area and another next to the door she used to enter and exit.

To train her, dig inside the litter box yourself and praise her with treats when she starts sniffing the tray and again when she uses it.

If you decide to keep her exclusively indoors, you might want to confine her to a single quiet room with her litter box, food, and water for about a week before slowly letting her explore the rest of the home.

These changes should be made gradually to minimize stress for Dusty Rose as she adjusts to indoor living.

    I hope this helps!

Hi Melina, Thank you for the suggestions. I will definitely try it and let you know how it goes. We moved into a temporary rental and Dusty Rose was already a tenant. She is really sweet when she is inside with us and loves to be petted. When she’s outside though she will ignore us. Another funny thing is she doesn’t meow she squeaks. I posted her pic if you care to see what she looks like. Thanks again for the input I really do appreciate it!

      Hi David,

That’s wonderful, and I absolutely love her picture. She’s a sweetheart.

      All the best,

      Melina
