We have a 7-month-old Russian Blue male cat, not neutered, and recently we’ve noticed yellow-green discharge around his penis after he urinates. What could this be?

It’s hard to say just from the description. An intact male cat will have some degree of discharge from the penis normally (termed smegma). This material can be whitish yellow. Usually they remove it as part of normal grooming behavior. In an intact male cat, you’d have to have more suspicion for a problem if there were other urination or overgrooming issues. If he seems to excessively lick the area, that may mean irritation is present. If he’s not using the box properly, that may also be a cause to have him looked at. You do have to differentiate this from spraying behavior, which is more of a territory marking behavior male cats engage in. If you think you’re seeing signs of concern, your vet can collect a urine sample and perform a urinalysis, possibly also have a look at the urinary bladder with their ultrasound if they have one, and see if a true medical concern is present, or just may be normal for an intact male cat.
