Litter box
Posted by Chris Jampolski on April 17, 2026 at 6:38 amHi. I have a cat that will pee inside the litter box, but then step out and poop right next to the litter box?

Hi Chris
Providing at least two litter trays is essential, as some cats prefer to urinate and defecate in separate boxes.
It’s also possible that your litter tray isn’t big enough (the size should be at least 1.5 times the cat’s length); your kitty may need a larger one to avoid soiling the same spot.
I recommend scooping the waste immediately, or at least twice daily, and providing extra litter trays. Also, place one of the litter boxes in a quiet area.
If she recently started pooping outside the tray, a medical issue could be the cause. Additionally, changes within the household can create anxiety for your cat, leading to inappropriate elimination.
Below are examples of large litter trays we currently use in our multi-cat household.
I hope that helps.

He might not like the litter even though he pees in it. or she.
