Hi Thompson, congratulations on your new kitty! There is no one single best brand. Diet choices depend on life stages, nutritional needs, personal preferences, budget, and other factors. I would encourage you to look at some of the diet review articles on cats.com that can help you make some informed decisions. There is an article I wrote about the different types of cat food: https://cats.com/types-of-cat-food. There also cat food reviews, nutrition guides, and more that you can find. I would advise against home-made cat food, especially for a new cat parent. A majority of recipes you’ll find online (even some by general practice vets like myself) have been shown to be missing nutrients for correct nutritional balance. I only trust diets formulated by board certified veterinary nutritionists. With a lot of time and dedication some folks may be able to do it well, but cats have more particular nutritional needs than humans. There’s a lot to learn and understand about having a new cat and trying to learn the nuances of nutrition at the same time is very likely to lead to errors.

I am part of a group on FB group called “feeding cats like cats” which they mostly promote raw feeding (which i dont do at this tiem) but it does have guides on commercial and canned foods they approve of which are mostly high protein/low filler.

the best one that is still not super costly i feed for my kittens are Dr Elseys duck recipe and American Journey Pate Chicken Recipe, i also add Tiny Tiger Turkey & Giblets Recipe in rotation still on the list but not as high quality.

I also still do some dry food and chose Open Farm because they are open about their ingredients and also grain free.
